Study laboratories

Study laboratory is a special method developed by the “School – Biology – Centre” in which the students work in small groups coached by a natural scientist. This instructional model, which is based on constructivist learning theories, inquiry based learning and problem based learning, can be used as well for the training for pre-service-teachers as for the teaching of pupils. The learners work together with scientists and do a lot of hands-on activities and find individual approaches to research. Afterwards every single learner can pose own scientific questions and answer them by using techniques of science.

The study laboratory is subdivided into four sections:

1. Impulse section:

At first the students have the possibility on several stations to get different impressions about the topic. The students make exciting experiments, use “new media”, such as a PC- for research, have to complete different orders, for instance to identify animals or plants, to apply a microscope and so on. To arouse student’s curiosity is the goal of the Impulse section.

2. Question section:

Because of the different impressions in the impulse section the students have got a lot of questions. With a special reliable, creative method we help the students to pose their individual questions. All questions are noted and out of this pool of interesting questions the whole group define a small research project to work on.

3. Research section:

In the research section the small groups work on their small research projects. They have to work on their own. The coach is in the role of a facilitator and accordingly the students take responsibility for their work. They have to plan their experiments, to record their outcomes and to deal with the assignment of tasks. In this section the students realise their small research projects and become acquainted with scientific methods and ways of thinking.

4. Presentation and discussion section:

At last the small groups have to present and discuss their results. The form of presentation is freely eligible. One goal of this section is to advance communicative competences.
